Equipment improvements, Caffeine Sharing, and Cafe Spend

Beanstats 2.17.0 makes the scale workflow hands-off with auto-tare and equipment defaults, gets caffeine estimates right when you share a brew, and answers what your coffee habit actually costs, at home and at the cafe.

What’s New

Default equipment per brewing style

Equipment can now be marked as a default for filter or espresso brews. New brews preselect the matching defaults, and switching brewing style swaps them as long as you haven’t changed the selection yourself. Picking a brew method merges its equipment into the selection instead of replacing it.

There is also a new Dosing Tray equipment type, which also supports ‘weight’, which is ideal for the auto-tare functionality.

Give your dosing tray, server, dosing cup, or portafilter a recorded weight, and when it rests on the scale for a moment, the scale tares automatically. The brew form shows a status row so you can see when a vessel is detected and tared.

The toggle for auto-tare lives in Settings > Scales > Auto Functions (off by default).

See the Scale Integration documentation for details.

Caffeine sharing

Brewing for two? Turn on Caffeine Sharing in Settings and a Number of drinkers field appears in the brew form. The caffeine estimate is divided by it, so Apple Health, the dashboard, widgets, and stats all reflect only your share. Repeat Brew copies the drinker count along with the recipe.

Estimates also got smarter for filter brews: when you record both water and beverage weight, the estimate is scaled by what actually ends up in the cup, since the grounds retain part of the brew water.

Cafe spend tracking

Cafe brews now have a price field. The Costs section in Statistics picks it up with two new stats, Café Spent and Avg Cost/Visit, next to your bean spending.

New statistics

  • Rating by Water Hardness buckets brews by the general hardness of their linked water profile (soft, moderate, hard, very hard), so you can see which water your palate prefers
  • Peak Pressure trend and Pressure vs Rating charts surface pressure sensor data in aggregate, mirroring the flow rate charts
  • New Top Rated lists for roast levels, grinders, brewers, and water profiles join the existing ones for origins, roasters, and varieties

Fixes & Improvements

  • Brew list rows now show the grind size when recorded
  • Fixed scroll lag in the edit brew form: photo thumbnails are now loaded off the main thread and brew tips no longer recompute on every scroll
  • Removed the home vs cafe spend comparison chart, which compared quantities that aren’t really comparable. The cafe spend stats remain

Happy brewing!
